Teaching your horse clean and correct maneuvers starts with knowing how to get control of his body & feet. Understanding the difference between bending and turning is one very important component in teaching a variety of exercises, and in this video Sid brings up some great points in how and when to use the turn vs. the bend.

When a horse is "gate sour", it's often a symptom of a bigger issue. Focusing on that one symptom as the whole problem often just makes it worse. This simple exercise targets the mental side of what your horse is dealing with when he or she constantly tries to leave the arena. Instead of becoming frustrated and taking it out on your horse, focus on the bigger picture. Is your horse traveling straight? Is he staying between your hands and legs? Is he guiding willingly? Is he secure in your direction, or does he feel like he has to look out for himself the whole time? Putting the time into an exercise like this builds security and trust between you and your horse. Often, fixing an issue is more simple than you might expect, but it requires dedication.

Hip control, (or hindquarter control), on our horses is a very important component that impacts nearly every aspect of their training. In this video, we talk about the difference between engaging the horse's hip, versus disengaging. The engage is vital for maneuvers such as lead changes or a sidepass, and can impact your horse's level of collection and strength.

This horse often refuses jumps and gets anxious when approaching new obstacles, so my plan had been to show you guys how I worked through that. Unfortunately/fortunately, the training session went a little too well and I didn't really get to show what I would have liked to. I know that there are a lot of things that still need so much work, but my job was to get this horse confident and relaxed, and I think that's going very well for us.
